Encounters: SAE Greenhouse Lab x School of Commons (SoC) in conversation

Encounters: SAE Greenhouse Lab x School of Commons (SoC) in conversation

A dialogue for liberating education

Date: 16th December 2024
Location: SAE Greenhouse Lab

Encounters is a discussion and publishing moment that explores the interplay between novel (scientific) findings and dominant narratives. How do discoveries disrupt established assumptions, challenge the canon and emerge into public discourse? Through case studies like water exports and river systems, we will reflect on/explore how knowledge flows from institutions despite or because of their preservation and practices. Drawing on methodologies from School of Commons’ Ways & Workings framework and the SAE Greenhouse’s research-led practice, Encounters aims to activate critical questions and discussions about themes such as informal learning environments, knowledge decentralization, decolonial pedagogy, and commoning practices and methods.

Following this closed session, you are invited to a public event of Encounters on 16 January 2025, 18:00-19:30, at the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art (more information to follow).

This event will be hosted at the SAE Greenhouse by Kenza Benabderrazik and Chantelle Lue and facilitated by SoC Alumn*, Lena Pozdnyakova and Luise Willer, (there, there working group). The format of Encounters is inscribed in the ongoing research of the project politics of (dis)assembling, exploring discursive and experimental forms of assembling today.

Encounters is part of Stretching Thresholds, Holding Streams, a commission at the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art initiated by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk in collaboration with Sophie Mak-Schram and collaborators. As one of the commission’s “streams”, SoC and SAE Greenhouse were introduced to each other. The resulting enquiry, Encounters, projects into the future through collective practices of ideation and imaginative approaches that could propose agroecological solutions for institutions such as the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art.

Kenza Benabderrazik, Agroecologist /Lecturer/ Researcher at SAE Greenhouse Lab, Sustainable Agroecosystems Group at ETH Zürich, exploring and fostering creative paths towards Agroecological transition and Food System transformation.

Chantelle Lue, Facilitator/Researcher at School of Commons, a community-based initiative dedicated to peer learning, and the study and development of self-organized knowledge production—through commons-based methods and practices. Located at the Zürich University of the Arts (ZHdK), the program takes place mostly online. Ways & Workings

Lena Pozdnyakova is an artist and researcher from Almaty, Kazakhstan, based in Berlin. The scope of her work involves questions related to the culture-nature dichotomy and breaking the boundary between the duality, the notion of the Anthropocene as a not-an-abstract concept but the embodiment of daily life, and blurring the boundary between life and art.

Luise Willer is an art historian and curator based in Berlin. In her research and practice she is interested in socially oriented artistic practices, in particular their forms of assembling and organizing. She examines such practices to learn about their visions of futurity, their collaborative processes and their critique of institutions.
