Black Stammtisch @ Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst

Stretching thresholds, holding streams is a project initiated by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk and developed with Sophie Mak-Schram and collaborators. A growing constellation of invested people from the surroundings of the Museum are being invited to think in and with the museum's thresholds. Together – as makers, artists, activists, neighbours, and associations – they are working on a project that takes its starting point inside the museum and flows in and out of it, over a period of several months. Therefore, a central aspect of the project is the notion of a «stream».

The Black Stammtisch is an open exchange format for the Black community, now taking place at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst. The Black Stammtisch provides a space for encounters, discussions, and collective knowledge exchange on topics such as racism, identity, everyday life, trends, and cultural diversity. In the exhibition space of the museum, people come together to share experiences, learn from each other, and discuss societal challenges. The Black Stammtisch promotes respectful dialogue and creates a safe space for marginalized voices in Switzerland.

November 9th: We is back! This round puts Black and BIPoC artists at the center! We want to discuss what it means to be Black and create art. How does this work, and how can viewers provide support?

A brief overview of the Black Stammtisch format: Black and BIPoC individuals sit at the table and talk. Part 2 is where everyone is invited to listen.

We come with the full awareness that this is an Accountable Space. An "Accountable Space" is an environment where participants engage with each other respectfully, take responsibility for their actions and statements, and are open to feedback. It fosters a safe and inclusive space for open discussions, especially on sensitive topics.
